History of the Grand Slam Australian Open (Part 1)

Someone loves tennis, they can’t ignore some tournaments in four Grand Slams which is the biggest tennis competition in the world.

Today we refer major events in history of the Australian Open. It is one of four Grand Slams, including the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open. Above all, the Australian open has a longer history so it has more rich achievements.

1, Origins about the Australian Open

The first event was established in 1905 at the Warehouseman’s cricket ground in Melbourne, Australia. This tournament was considered as a good opportunity to practice and exchange tennis skills among players.

Although it was exclusive in Australia, it was taken place outside like New Zealand with two titles for host countries so on….it was offered athletes from all over the world.

Originally, per season was organized in one different city like Melbourne, Sydney, Perth or Brisbane. Then the rule was changed that all season only was taken place at Melbourne. This change was due to Melbourne was an attacking city about all fields: economies, art, sports so they could serve a large number of spectators. The organizer wanted to build up a professional competition with spectators up to 140,000 viewers. It became one of the biggest event in the world. as a good result, the Australia tournament was moved to Melbourne Park in 1988, then it built up frame and success immediately.

So, nowadays people automatically consider Melbourne as a host city.

As a normal schedule of the Australian open, it was annually held every once year in January. The schedule should be maintained until nowadays. Expect the season in 1977, there was twice events in one year because there was shift in the draw, so Dec they continued to organize other seasons in the next year.
